the worst feeling about trying to draw is being a mediocre artist. You realize you’re not terrible and family and friends who can’t draw at all tell you all the time how amazing you are, but you, as the artist, have seen what amazing really is and you realize that it isn’t you.

I think the point is there will always be someone who’s levels ahead of you and levels behind you and with time, dedication, and practice anyone can achieve what they dream to if they’re passionate and humble about their work. Call me an optimist, and trust me I’ve lamented time after time about my artwork, but I’ve gone from what I felt was literal turds to something I would’ve jaw dropped at two years prior and probably cried that someday I’d attain that. I still know I can most definitely improve, and I strive to with every piece I do. If you can love and find passion in what you’re doing at the time but know there’s no limits to what someday you will be able to create, improvement then actually feels like an achievement and worth striving for. Those magnificent artists you see didn’t get there over night, which is why I feel when someone says art is ‘talent’ it’s a load of bullshit. Art is blood, sweat, tears, self loathing, and a whole lot of self criticism and angry reflection that perpetually propels you forward if you harness your emotions correctly.

That’s not even going to say that art is relative and a realism painting versus a chibi anime girl has literally no more or less value than the other because someone will find more appeal in one piece, or simply cherish both. It’s up to you to take your craft as a blessing and ever growing thing inside you, or constantly compare yourself to others and take the fact someone else can create something you find stunning as a personal attack, but just realise, you’re the attacker. Not them. Unless they’re an asshole, y’know, then ignore them.

Ahh Hen Chan is spot on right. I’ve gone through so much pain and loathing over my art over the years but literally every artist does it. It’s just part of the experience. And something I’ve learned from many talented artists is that it is incredibly important to never compare yourself to others. And that applies to anything, really. It is a great idea to be inspired by others and to strive to reach a certain level but beating yourself down for not being as goo as someone else is the worst most useless thing you could ever do. You can’t be as goo as that person and they can’t be as goo as you because they aren’t you and you aren’t them. You can only be the best that you can be. Strive for greatness in yourself. And almost any truly passionist artist will tell you that art is constantly about improvement no matter how much you improve. Even the great artists you inspire to be like will always be improving just like you. And it’s really funny because I can guarantee you that the artists you compare yourself too that make you feel so mediocre have looked at another person’s artwork and felt the exact same way. We. All. Do. It. But it’s really about learning NOT doing it and striving to be the very best that only YOU can be.♥ (That was supposed to be a lot shorter than that but ahh.)

I finally gave in and drew a furry anthro thingy. She’s a bunny of course.

I had a lot of fun drawing her. And sometimes I like to draw really exaggerated nipples. But I like this style of drawing. I definitely want to draw more furry/anthros. :D

Can anyone suggest a goo type of sketchbook for me? I haven’t boughten a new sketch book in.. Years. And I’ve been buying the same cheap ones since middle school. I’d like to start drawing traditionally again and if there are any other materials you want to suggest then I’d love to hear it. I have some pigma sensei pens i need to use and i want to try and buy some copic markers. And by that I mean buy one and go broke.
